Verbier And Verbier Ski Resort

Benjamin Locke

A man at the top of Verbier Ski Resort

Perched high in the Swiss Alps, Verbier along with Verbier Ski Resort, has evolved from humble grazing pastures into an iconic destination for skiing enthusiasts. Where mountain goats once roamed, skiers now carve through some of the finest slopes in the world. In the 1920s, daring adventurers hiked from Sembrancher to ski these pristine peaks, and by 1950, the first lift marked the beginning of Verbier's transformation into a world-class resort. Today, Verbier combines exceptional skiing with a charming village ambiance that feels straight out of the 16th century.

If high-altitude adventures and breathtaking alpine vistas are calling your name, it’s time to plan your escape to Verbier. Verbier is available on the Epic Pass. Full pass holders have 5 days at Verbier 4 Vallées, with an associated lodging booking.

Where Is Verbier?

Verbier sits in the canton of Valais, southwestern Switzerland, perched at 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) on a sunlit plateau with panoramic views of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc. The village blends alpine charm with modern comforts, and ski lifts rise directly from the center, granting quick access to world-class slopes.

Verbier is the largest resort in the 4 Vallées ski area – Switzerland’s biggest interconnected ski region. The 4 Vallées connects five ski resorts including Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon, and La Tzoumaz, offering an expansive alpine paradise with over 400 km of trails. Within Verbier, key areas include the iconic Mont Fort (3,300 meters/10,827 feet), Savoleyres, and Bruson, catering to all levels of skiers and snowboarders.

Understanding the 4 Vallées Ski Area

Map of the 4 Valles

Verbier, a premier destination within the 4 Vallées ski domain, is also accessible on the Mont Blanc Unlimited Pass, offering an unforgettable multi-country skiing experience. As highlighted in our Chamonix Guide, this pass allows skiers to explore Chamonix in France, Courmayeur in Italy, and Verbier in Switzerland over a set number of days. While the pass covers the Verbier 4 Vallées area for only one day, this still provides an excellent opportunity to experience Verbier's world-class slopes and world-changing views.

Verbier Geography

Rising from the village, the terrain soars to the summit of Mont Fort, the highest point in the 4 Vallées at 3,300 meters. The area’s high elevation and north-facing slopes ensure consistently good snow coverage, while glacier access guarantees skiing well into late spring.

Verbier Snow Quality

Verbier is famous for its powder days, especially on the upper slopes of Mont Fort and Tortin. The region benefits from regular snowfall throughout the winter, and the resort’s grooming teams ensure excellent conditions. Even late in the season, Verbier’s glacial aspects keep the snow light and skiable.

What is the best time to ski in Verbier?

Verbier’s ski season typically runs from late November to April, with peak conditions between December and March. Crowds flock to the resort during holidays and weekends. For a quieter experience, visit in January or during the late-season spring skiing in March and April. Sun-drenched afternoons on the slopes, followed by a killer après-ski scene in the village, make late March an especially magical time to visit.

Many people choose to go to Verbier Freeride Week which is a major event where skiers and snowboarders from around the world gather to take on some of the best off-piste trails. It features exciting competitions, live music, and plenty of festivities, making it a thrilling time to visit the resort. It typically takes place in January, though subject to change. Verbier is also host to the YETI Xtreme Verbier by Honda, the culminating event of the Freeride World Tour, which generally takes place in late March.

Verbier Ski Resort: The Crown of the 4 Vallées Ski Area

Verbier ski resort consists of three distinct sectors, stretching from the tree-lined slopes of Bruson to the high-altitude challenges of Mont Fort, the highest point in the 4 Vallées.

Bruson

Bruson is Verbier’s quiet retreat, tucked across the valley from the bustling main resort. Known for its tree-lined descents and untouched powder, Bruson offers a more secluded skiing experience while still delivering stunning views of the Grand Combin and Mont Blanc massifs. On a fresh snow day, Bruson is a local favorite, with fewer crowds and excellent off-piste terrain hidden beneath the trees.

Mont Fort

Mont Fort is the jewel in Verbier’s crown. The summit offers not only the most challenging descents but also unrivaled views stretching from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc. On a clear day, the panorama is breathtaking.

Skiing from the top of Mont Fort is not for the faint of heart. Steep mogul fields and technical chutes dominate the upper slopes, making this a paradise for expert skiers. Verbier has unquestionably some of the best back country in all of Europe. For those less inclined to tackle the black runs, the cable car ride alone is worth the journey.

Savoleyres

This area offers more relaxed skiing, with gentle, sunlit slopes and wide-open runs. Savoleyres is particularly popular with families and beginner skiers, thanks to its softer terrain and sledding areas.

You can easily get to La Tzoumaz which is a separate ski resort in the 4 Valleys, directly from Savoleyres via the gondola that connects the two areas. The lift takes you over the ridge, dropping you into La Tzoumaz’s north-facing slopes.

The Verbier Skiing Experience

Verbier attracts a diverse crowd, from thrill-seeking free-riders to casual skiers enjoying the views. The resort’s ski schools cater to all abilities, and even seasoned skiers can benefit from local guides who know the mountain’s secret stashes.

On a powder day, Verbier comes alive with skiers racing to claim the first tracks. But even on non-powder days, the expansive terrain and lively atmosphere make every run exhilarating.
