Stratton Resort Overview

The tallest peak in Southern Vermont (3,875 ft), Stratton has a vertical descent similar to that of Deer Valley and a mix of terrain that will captivate skiers and riders for several days. Stratton is one of the easiest Vermont mountains to reach from NYC (~4 hours) and Boston (~3 hours). The compact base village offers a range of convenient dining and après options. Ski in ski out accommodations are plentiful and vary from high-end condos and private homes to budget friendly hotels. Stratton is the birthplace of snowboarding (down the road from Jake Burton's hometown, Londonderry) and has some of the best terrain parks in the East. The Gondola enables top to bottom runs with a chance to warm up in between.

The Sun Bowl side is a treat with longer runs, smaller crowds and slightly warmer temperatures. Manicured groomers and tree skiing are signature features. The downside of Stratton's location are the crowds on weekends and holidays. However, investments in the lift infrastructure have paid off - uphill capacity is top tier (nearly 34,000 ppl /hr - similar to much larger resorts) - or for regulars, consider First Tracks. The ski & snowboarding school is top notch and has a separate racing program.

Pass Overview: The Full Ikon Pass is a season pass to Stratton and the Ikon Base Pass provides 5 days. The Stratton Select Pass ($559/ $3399) provides unlimited access to Stratton with 10 holiday blackouts. You can also add First Tracks for early access on valid weekend days.

Quick Take

Let's Go
  • The highest peak in southern VT and one of the most accessible from nearby metropolitan areas

  • Excellent teaching facilities for skiers and boarders including dedicated beginner terrain parks

  • "Country club" feel, manicured with some of the highest snow quality in southern Vermont, leading snow-making capabilities

  • High quality lift infrastructure; including a base to peak gondola, high speed six packs and uphill capacity of a much larger mountain

  • The compact base area in close proximity to the slopes is very convenient for families with young children

Hesitations
  • Crowds on weekends and holidays are large and lift lines can be long (a drawback of the Southern Vermont location)

  • Super steeps are lacking. Many of the Blacks ski like Intermediate runs and the steepest pitches are short

  • If you are looking for natural terrain, your options will be limited as most of the mountain is groomed regularly

  • On very windy days, the gondola may be on hold and terrain at the top may open late

Insider Tips
  • Park at the Sun Bowl Lodge Base for faster access to the mountain (avoid walking through the base village). The Sun Bowl tends to be less crowded and can be a little warmer

  • For the most luxurious way to enjoy Stratton, consider the Stratton Mountain Club, this members only club feels like an oasis, especially when crowds are larger

  • Have lunch in the Base Village, there are more options, smaller crowds and its easy to get on and off the mountain

  • The Full Ikon Pass serves as a season pass for Stratton with access to 40+ additional resorts
